  The best Guinness this side of the Atlantic

  Felt like home from the moment we walked in. The barman took his time with the pour and you could taste the difference. We stayed for the trad session and didn't want to leave.

  Stew like my grandmother used to make

  Tender lamb, deep broth, that bit of pearl barley that just disappears in your mouth. The brown bread was warm. The fiddle player came over to say hello on his break.

  Stunning room without trying too hard, brilliant service, exceptional food. The seafood chowder is unreasonably good. We're already booked for next month.

  A proper Irish night out

  Booked a corner table for six and we were looked after like family. The shepherd's pie is the real thing — no fancy reinventions, just done right. Live music kicked in around nine and the room came alive.

  Best meal of our trip

  We came in off the street with no booking on a Tuesday and they squeezed us in. The ribeye was perfect, the staff funny and quick, and we ended up chatting to the regulars at the bar until last call.

  Whiskey selection is no joke

  I came for the Redbreast 15 and stayed for the Green Spot. The bartender knew his stuff and the recommendations were spot on. The cheeseboard with a Connemara peated was the perfect finish.

  Sunday roast done properly

  Crackling on the pork like a sheet of glass, gravy you'd drink from the jug. Kids loved it too. Booked for Mother's Day already.

  Lovely room, busy on a Saturday

  Food and drinks were excellent — the bangers and champ in particular. Took a little while to get a second round at the bar when the band started, but the atmosphere more than made up for it.
